CHILDREN OF U.S. MARINES TAKE FREEDOM SAIL & TOUR
Schooner LYNX and Newport Nautical Museum Honoring U.S. Troops by Hosting "Sail & Tour" Program for Children from Camp Pendleton Schools

NEWPORT BEACH, CA (March 31, 2003) --In honor of our brave military men and women called to active duty overseas, the Defense of Freedom Foundation and the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum are co-hosting museum tours and complimentary morning and afternoon sails aboard the 1812 privateer schooner, LYNX, for children of those Marines fighting for America's freedom.

Beginning Tuesday and Wednesday, April 1 and 2, at 9:00 am each day, sixty 5th and 6th grade students from Mary Fay Pendleton School will arrive at the Museum in Newport Beach. Students will then board LYNX and participate in a three-hour lesson at sea, where they will join a watch, hoist the sails, steer the ship, and become part of the privateer crew aboard the ship. Before and after the sail the students will have full run of the Museum's model gallery, special exhibits and classrooms. Additional students will participate on April 8-9 and the program will continue for as long as needed.

The Defense of Freedom Foundation is dedicated to teaching the value of freedom in early American history and our struggle to preserve independence during the War of 1812. The maritime challenges and privateering effort during this period are taught aboard the 78-foot, square topsail schooner, LYNX. The ship operates from the Scout Sea Base located in Newport Harbor.

The Newport Harbor Nautical Museum preserves the nautical history of Southern California and beyond. A major part of its program is working with children to inspire and motivate them about our environment, history and nautical heritage.

"The Defense of Freedom Foundation is proud to share the privateer LYNX with the children of the Camp Pendleton Marines. It is the mission of our ship and crew to teach the lesson of America's first defense of freedom," said Woodson K. Woods, Executive Director of the Foundation. "We are particularly honored to now serve the children of those men and women who boldly defend our freedom today."

"It is our responsibility to support the families, and especially the kids, of our troops while they are fighting for our freedom. It's the least we can do," commented Glenn Zagoren, President and CEO of the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum. "Our Museum is proud to be a part of this event and I salute the Defense of Freedom Foundation and the crew of the schooner LYNX for having the vision and spirit to make this wonderful idea a reality. We invite other organizations to do the same."

Major Sean T. Moore, USMC (Ret.), Marine Liaison for the Foundation in this effort added, "This will be a great day for our Marines' children; a day of education and fun that we hope provides some respite from the stress they endure during such difficult times. I encourage any organization that desires to help the families of our Marines to contact the Camp Pendleton Public Affairs Office at 760-725-5011."
