29 July, 2012 Shelburne, Nova Scotia, CA

Posted by privateerlynx on Monday Jul 30, 2012 Under All

Greetings all!

As of today we are still in the beautiful town of Shelburne. Yesterday was one of those all time, picture perfect Nova Scotian days with bright sunlight and just a little breeze. More than 1200 people came aboard Lynx for a visit with equal size crowds visiting the other vessels as well. Today is not quite as sunny but we’re still hopeful of a good turnout.

Special thanks to the Shelburne Yacht Club for a wonderful meal last night for all crew hands!

The weather looks good for a departure midday tomorrow but I will commune some more with the weather guessers and and take it from there.

Til next time,

Cheers Captain John

Hi Cindy – I have to relate one of the most spectacular things I have ever seen.  It was around July 6 and I was running a small outboard off Newport Neck looking for some lost lobster traps.  A crystal clear blue day with 10-15 knots out of the south  -when just past the rocky outcrops I first saw the Lynx, full sail charging on a reach for Newport.  Without a house, boat, or person in my field of view I was immediately transported back 200 years.  It was one of the most beautiful scenes I have ever witnessed.  I was spell bound.  The image is etched into my brain.
Many thanks to you and all the crew that keeps maritime history alive
Jim

26 July, 2012 Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, CA

Posted by privateerlynx on Thursday Jul 26, 2012 Under All

Greetings all!

We are still secure to the tall ship Unicorn here in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, enjoying the visiting folks and the crews company. While we still have Shelburne to go I believe that we-the ships crews-are all mind full that soon the fleet will separate and this easy visitation with our friends will be coming to an end. Ah well-’till next year.

Crowds have been very large for Lunenburg with 1400 visiting Lynx yesterday, even though they had to cross the Unicorn to get to us. It didn’t hurt that the weather was perfect…

Being tied to Unicorn is a treat and let me point out that-in the nominal confusion of docking the tall ship fleet in Lunenburg in a 1 hour period of time-Unicorn was kind enough to offer to let us raft up. This is a ship that is crewed entirely by women and the students are also women, offering an opportunity to learn the Tall Ships technique in an all female environment. Special thanks to Dawn SantaMaria and Captain Denise for their hospitality!

Our plan is to depart for Shelburne tomorrow-hopefully after a frontal passage which will bring the winds from “fresh and on the nose” to “moderate and abaft the beam”. Maybe even clear out the fog and the rain a touch if we’re lucky.

Lunenburg, you’re the best!

Til next time-

Cheers, Captain John

24 July, 2012 Arrival in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, CA

Posted by privateerlynx on Tuesday Jul 24, 2012 Under All

Greetings all!

Today finds us at L./L 44-22.5N by 064-18.7W or tied up to the Tall Ship Unicorn which in turn is tied up to the Lunenburg Fisheries Museum. Halifax ended in fine style yesterday with a parade of sail leading the fleet out of the harbor. The day before we had enjoyed a parade of crew through the streets of Halifax with our fellows armed to the teeth-of course!

The sail to the West from Halifax was fairly heavy going with strong SW breezes sustained at 30 kts but we got enough room to weather Sambro Ledges and sailed towards Mahone Bay-before dumping sail and pushing up to Rose Bay where many of the fleet trickled throughout the evening. There was some broken gear with Roseway losing her main gaff jaws and a general good stretching of the fleets rig. The parade of sail into Lunenburg began early. After a quick consult around the fleet we decided to head for the dock early so as to avoid approach rain, fog and strong South winds. We are presently at the dock in rain and fog-so occasionally we call it prudently.

Well hoping for a great festival in Lunenburg!

Cheers,

Captain John

20 July, 2012 Halifax, Nova Scotia, CA

Posted by privateerlynx on Friday Jul 20, 2012 Under All

Greetings all from sunny Halifax!

The sunny part is certainly a relief after the damp run around from St Andrews. It almost seems as though there is a micro climate from the harbor mouth and north. Had a nice sail up the harbor, in company with Peacemaker and Pride of Baltimore II and came to dock right alongside of the Sackville, a Canadian corvette from World War I. This dock and several others nearby are all part of the Halifax Museum of the Atlantic-a fine establishment which has been hosting many tall ships in the years previous and it’s a pleasure to be back among such friends.

I want to compliment the organizers of the Halifax event. The operation is seamless-to date with wonderful support for all the vessels. In the mix too are the folks from Tall Ships America who have been the organizers for the entire Tall Ships Challenge East Coast Tour which started in Savannah this spring. Hats off to them!

The US Coast Guard Cutter Eagle has just arrived and the Amistad making her way up the harbor, the Tall Ship fleet is complete. From here we will spread out to many smaller ports in Nova Scotia with Lynx heading first to Lunenburg and then on the Shelburne, NS. These are both wonderful ports, full of history and the heritage of the sea. But first we will enjoy the pleasures of Halifax and one last opportunity to gather with all of our shipmates in one port-something that doesn’t happen very often.

“Til next time”

Cheers,

Captain John

17 July, 2012 St. Andrews, New Brunswick, CA to Halifax, Nova Scotia, CA

Posted by privateerlynx on Tuesday Jul 17, 2012 Under All

DSCF5939Greetings all!

Today finds us at L/L 44-30.7N by 063-49.6W or in Blind Bay, Nova Scotia. It has been a wet, cold and foggy transit from St Andrews, New Brunswick with the crew standing “watch and watch” in the zero visibility and it’s nice to get the hook down to let everyone fall over and get some sleep.

What can be said about the St. Andrews gathering! As we rose and fell 26 feet twice per day, appearing and disappearing from the public’s eye we came to find that we had become part of one of the warmest communities I had ever been to. Everyone was friendly and helpful and went out of their way to try and insure that we had a good visit.  A very special thanks to Vaughn McIntyre and BB Chamberlain (and his assistants) who looked after us so well. Also, best thanks to Town Manager Tim Henderson, the Niger Reef for that great dinner and-of course-the St. Andrews Yacht Club for all that bacon! I still have your burgee and will fly it when next we visit. A treat to be cheered and I hope the return gun fire damaged no windows…
From here it’s off to Halifax tomorrow and the rejoining with the rest of the Tall Ship fleet.  The last big Hurrah of this year’s fleet event.

Cheers,

Captain John
