Greetings,
Our position is L/L 36-16.0N by 075-44.8W or 2 miles off the outer banks at Currituck Sound. We are about to change course for the rhumbline to NE to take advantage of this NW breeze filling in behind the front. Seas are still sloppy but its doable so off we go!
Cheers Captain John

Greetings all,

We are presently at L/L 32-32.9N by 079-51.0W or 6 miles SSW of Charleston Harbor, motor sailing in light SSE breezes. Regrettably we had to retire from the TSA race when, after 8 hours of racing we passed the start line off Savannah for the second time. The wind was just not cooperating, going light while leaving a slogging slop to deal with. With an eye for a developing low approaching Hatteras I made the decision to start pushing. All aboard are well-if a little green.

Cheers Captain John

Having finished breakfast we are taking time for chores before working our way back to sea and down the 20 miles to the mouth of the Savannah River which we will transit on Thursday.
Greetings.

Lynx position is 40-48.7N by 073-45.9W or tied up with our friends at the Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy. We’re here avoiding some windy weather which has been blowing in from the South and making going South challenging. Happily we built a few extra days into the timing of our trip to Savannah for just such a possibility. Should be underway again tomorrow through New York City and pick up a more favorable breeze off the New Jersey coast.

Well the winter cover is on and has withstood its first wind storm-so I am hopeful that it will hold up well during our stay in Mystic Seaport. The only spars left aboard as I write are the lower masts themselves and the main boom, which is acting as the cover ridge pole. All the rest are down and under cover along with as many pieces of varnish which could be detached from the ship and brought indoors.

Today myself, four crew and two volunteers began the maintenance projects which we have been hoping to undertake this past season. Alex Myers, the Engineer is overhauling the water maker and working with a Caterpillar technician servicing the main engine. On deck we are stripping most of the varnish down to bare wood and beginning to build up coat after coat-up to the prescribed eight coats required to protect the wood from the elements. Over in the “Shed” crew are sanding and painting and servicing booms, gaffs and yards-all while being indoors!

I will send updates as we push the projects along. There is more than enough to keep us busy throughout the winter so that, when Lynx emerges from her cocoon she will be sparkling, well painted and ready to sail during the Bicentennial year of the beginning of the War of 1812.

Cheers Captain John Beebe-Center
