I wasn’t sure who to direct this to so I chose to send it to all three of you. I know I never had the opportunity to speak with you but I did want to be sure I took a moment to thank you. I had the unique privilege of cooking on the Lynx for 2 weeks while we sailed from Stergon Bay to Port Washington and then onto Chicago. If I am being honest, I quickly agreed to provide assistance because my Captain, Wesley Heersen of Niagara, had asked me to. But at the time, I really want to be on Niagara (I had only just met the ship the day before in Green Bay). I had never cooked in a galley or sailed on a schooner. I was simply a volunteer from Erie, that owns a Bed & Breakfast, and offers whatever assistance I can to the Niagara.
However, being aboard the Lynx has been one of the greatest adventures of my life. The crew immediately accepted me (even under such unusual circumstances) and although I found myself struggling in the galley, they never faltered. Always being so supportive. Especially the Captain who made me feel right at home, right away and Chiefmate Leann who guided me through a few stressful times. On Niagara, the kids call me Mom (as I am 40 years old), and very quickly ‘my new crew’ started calling me mom too. It was very endearing.
I think it is a tribute to the program that you offer to have such a wonderful crew. I know they are about to go through some changes but it’s the foundation of your organization that really keeps it all together. Which is clearly evident when onboard. I also had the privilege of meeting Captain Trost in Port Washington and he too was very encouraging. They represent your organization well.
I know I am one of hundreds that spent a fleeting moment aboard your beautiful vessel. But I thought it was important to let you know that she is more than beauty. She has a crew that cares deeply and a program that I think is invaluable in today’s day and age. Thank you for a rare and wonderful opportunity.
With sincerity,
Laurie Lawrence
